Jakub Julian Ziółkowski’s works have a unique quality of toeing the line between abstraction – much like the colors, shapes, and spiritual inquiry of a Hilma af Klint painting – and classic figuration, allowing him to abstract what we are seeing.
Like paintings, Ziolkowski’s monotypes are very direct and can be
spontaneous or deliberate. These are monotypes exploiting the classical
technique but without using a plate in the process. The drawing is made
by the artist with a pencil on one side of special Japanese tissue
paper, which is placed on an ink-covered glass to receive a transfer.
