We
invite you to the opening of her solo exhibition,
Splendor of the
Artisan, curated by Karolina Ziebinska-Lewandowska with the artist present, at Église des
Trinitaires Arles.
The exhibition will remain open from 3 July – 27 August 2023, daily 10 am – 7:30 pm
The
exhibition is the first monographic presentation of the artist in
France. It reveals the universe of symbols and images created by Zofia
Kulik, and shows the details of her technical approach, tracing the
beginnings of her fascination for the transformed photographic image.
The works thematically focus on the relationship between man and woman,
the individual and the mass, as well as symbols of power and
totalitarianism. The works presented are the masterpieces of Kulik,
among others, the famous self-portrait Splendor of Myself IV or the
monumental Favorite Balance, which is part of the collections of the
Stedelijk Museum.
Zofia
Kulik was first active in the artistic duo KwieKulik (1971–1987) with
her partner Przemysław Kwiek. They performed, often staging their
private life for the camera, creating an alternative, subversive space
independent from the official artistic circuit. After the breakup, she
devoted herself entirely to photography. Since 1987, Zofia Kulik has
been working individually, creating black-and-white, multiple-exposure
photographs. Her work has been shown at Documenta 12 in Kassel (2007)
and the 47th Venice Biennale (1997), MoMA NY. Also, many works are part of renowned international collections such as Tate Modern,
Centre Pompidou, Moderna Museet, as well as MoMA NY.
